In Memory of Che Grace

With a heavy heart we share that Che Grace peacefully passed away on the 21st of July. You may recognise Che from previous participant spotlights, as it was always a highlight for us to see him out on his adventures with his team of support workers. Kirsten specifically worked closely with Che, his mum Maris and the wider care team for the entirety of his contact with TCG. Below are a few words from her:

"During the past seven years I have had the privilege to observe many past and present TCG Support workers provide exceptional care and support for Che whilst he was navigating his journey living with early onset dementia.  I can't really recall "work' without Che and his wonderful Mum Maris who were a fundamental part of the "early days" of The Companion Group.  Over the years, and up until early last week, Che on a daily basis would head out and about in the community with his support workers for a lovely beach walk or a cruisey drive around taking in the sights. Che's favourite 90's grunge music would be playing in the background and countless hot chocolate drinks were had.  I am grateful to have met both Che and Maris.  After speaking with his recent team of support workers last week, there is no doubt that Che made a positive and lasting impact here at TCG for many of us.  Che will be missed and remembered dearly".

Participant Spotlight: Andrew E

This month, we’re shining a light on Andrew and his wonderful support shifts with The Companion Group.

Andrew joined us last year and has become a valued part of our community. He is supported by a large, dedicated team who all look forward to their time with him. His smile is something everyone enjoys.

With the colder weather making walks a little less appealing, Andrew’s team has found creative ways to spend time indoors. They enjoy movies, reading aloud, and listening to music together, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere.

A special highlight is that several of Andrew’s support staff, including Noah, Lachie, Mario and Lambros, are talented guitar players. They often bring music into their shifts, playing a range of songs that Andrew clearly enjoys. His smile says it all.

We are proud to support Andrew and grateful for the joy he brings to each day.

What to expect from Support Coordination

Choosing the right support coordinator can make a huge difference in how your NDIS journey unfolds. For many participants, this relationship becomes the foundation for building independence, navigating funding, and connecting with the right supports. But how do you know if a support coordinator is actually doing a good job?

Let’s break down what to look out for, and what might be missing if you don’t have the right fit.

1. Do they help you understand your plan?

A great support coordinator doesn't just hand you a brochure or talk in circles. They should take the time to walk you through your plan, explain what funding is available (and what it's for), and make sure you're empowered to make your own choices.

Red flag: If you’re still unsure what your plan covers after meeting with them, they’re not doing their job.

2. Are they building a support system around you, not just a service schedule?

Support coordination isn’t about just booking services. It’s about helping you design a sustainable network of formal and informal supports that reflect your values and goals. A good coordinator will take the time to understand your life, not just your budget.

Red flag: If it feels like a copy-and-paste solution, it probably is.

3. Are they responsive and proactive, or just reactive?

You want someone who checks in regularly, helps prevent issues before they become problems, and doesn’t disappear once your plan is underway. Crisis planning and problem-solving should be part of their approach, not just emergencies.

Red flag: If you're always the one chasing them, something’s off.

4. Are they transparent about pricing, hours, and travel costs?

NDIS pricing can be confusing. A good coordinator will clearly explain what you’re being charged for, how your hours are being used, and whether travel costs apply. It’s your funding and you deserve to know how it’s being spent.

Red flag: Vague or inconsistent billing practices are worth questioning.

5. Do they help you build capacity, not dependence?

The goal of NDIS is to help people live more independently, not become reliant on services forever. A great support coordinator will actively coach and encourage you to take more control over time, building your skills and confidence along the way.

Red flag: If your coordinator seems to be doing everything for you, rather than with you, they may be holding you back.

Ready to Make a Change?

If you're not getting this kind of experience, it might be time to explore other options. The good news? We have capacity for new participants.

We offer local, participant-focused support coordination that ticks all of the boxes above, with transparency, reliability, and a genuine commitment to your growth.

Festival of Glass

Every year, the town of Drysdale on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula transforms into a hub of creativity during the Festival of Glass, Australia's only dedicated glass art festival.

Launched in 2011, this volunteer-run event celebrates glass as both an artform and a community connector. The festival includes:

·     Glass Expo: A showcase of stunning glass art, live demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

·     Treasure Hunt: Local businesses host glass artworks as prizes in a fun, shop-local challenge.

·     Workshops and Mentorships: For beginners and experienced artists, with a strong focus on youth and emerging talent.

·     The Forest of Glass: A unique installation featuring over 1,000 handmade glass pieces inspired by nature.

The Festival also acknowledges and celebrates local Aboriginal culture and helps boost the creative economy across the Bellarine region.

It’s art, community, and culture viewed through the lens of glass.
